The Mount Rushmore Society--through the Mount Rushmore Bookstores, the Mount Rushmore Audio Tour, Mount Rushmore Memories, the Mount Rushmore Institute and other activities--is dedicated to the preservation, promotion and enhancement of Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the values it represents through a partnership with the National Park Service. The Society has been supporting Mount Rushmore National Memorial since work on the mountain first began. We are one of the nation’s largest and oldest National Park Service friends organizations, raising millions for facility improvements and promotional events since 1930.
Some of the highlights of our partnership with the park include the following:
Serving as the first gift shop concessionaire in the 1940s.
Embarking on a nationwide Preservation Fund campaign in the 1980s which raised $25 million and spurred a total of $56 million in facility improvements.
Funding the redevelopment at Mount Rushmore in the 1990s which included a $17 million parking facility operated by the Society for 20 years.
Creating the Independence Day Celebration fireworks display viewed by millions via satellite.
Since 1993, we have also served as a cooperating association, operating the Mount Rushmore Bookstores and the Mount Rushmore Audio Tour in the park. Sales from these outlets have supported educational programs and products for the memorial. The Mount Rushmore Institute is another division of the Society, serving as a forum to advance the cause of freedom and the principles of democracy. While flying out of Rapid City, stop by the Mount Rushmore Memories Airport Store, which features many of the educational products sold at Mount Rushmore plus convenience items.
You can be a part of our mission as well by becoming a member of our organization.
